Some stores may be interested in buying your collection, or selling it for a commission. Gaming stores are a great place to look for buyers. Start by looking for local online marketplaces such as Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, or local online classifieds where you can post about the cards you have for sale. As such, you’ll get offers for less money than you would online: be prepared for lowball offers. When selling locally, the number of potential buyers is much smaller compared to an online marketplace like eBay. Selling Pokemon cards locally can be a convenient option for collectors looking to get rid of their entire collection quickly, without the complexities of listing and shipping. Conduct due diligence on the buyer, and follow best practices to ensure a successful and secure selling experience. ![]() Adverse childhood experiences were significantly associated with poorer health outcomes, health risk behaviors, and socioeconomic challenges. Results: Nearly one in six adults in the study population (15.6%) reported four or more types of adverse childhood experiences. Logistic regression modeling adjusting for age group, race/ethnicity, and sex was used to calculate population attributable fractions representing the potential reduction in outcomes associated with preventing adverse childhood experiences. Outcomes were self-reported status for coronary heart disease, stroke, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cancer (excluding skin cancer), kidney disease, diabetes, depression, overweight or obesity, current smoking, heavy drinking, less than high school completion, unemployment, and lack of health insurance. Methods: Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data were collected from 25 states that included state-added adverse childhood experience items during 2015–2017. Therefore, reducing adverse childhood experiences is critical to avoiding multiple negative health and socioeconomic outcomes in adulthood. Avoidance is only a short-term solution, and in the long-run, it can actually cause your feelings and thoughts to become more intense.Introduction: Adverse childhood experiences, such as violence victimization, substance misuse in the household, or witnessing intimate partner violence, have been linked to leading causes of adult morbidity and mortality. As a result, people may rely on unhealthy coping strategies (for example, using substances) as a way of avoiding these symptoms. The symptoms people experience after a traumatic event can be very distressing. Unhealthy coping behaviors: Just as avoidance of activities, situations, or people can be problematic, so can the avoidance of thoughts and feelings. ![]() This avoidance can then lead to a worsening of symptoms and eventually PTSD. Avoidance usually leads to more avoidance as it reinforces the belief that the world is not a safe place. However, you must pay attention to avoidance behaviors. Avoidance: After a traumatic event, it is very common to avoid certain situations, activities, or people. This symptom may also cause you to isolate yourself from others, including important sources of social support. This symptom can be a sign that you are at risk of becoming depressed. Loss of interest: It is important to keep an eye out for a loss of interest in activities that you used to once enjoy, as well as feelings of being detached from others. This is especially likely to occur in situations or places that remind you of your traumatic event. Places or situations you once felt secure in may now feel threatening and be anxiety-provoking. Consequently, people may feel as though any situation or place is potentially dangerous. Feeling unsafe: After a traumatic event, our assumptions about the world being a safe and secure place are understandably shattered.Following a traumatic event, your body's alarm system is going to be more sensitive in an attempt to protect you from future traumatic events. They are preparing us to flee, freeze, or to fight. Fear and anxiety tell us that there is some kind of danger present, and all the bodily sensations that go along with fear and anxiety are essentially designed to help us respond to that danger. ![]() This is again part of your body's natural protection system. Hyperarousal: Just as you are going to likely be more on-guard, you are also likely going to feel more keyed-up and on edge following a traumatic event. This natural safety mechanism is going to be more sensitive following a traumatic event. This is actually a very protective symptom as your body is attempting to keep you safe by making you more aware of potential sources of threat and danger. Hypervigilance: It is also very natural to feel more on-guard and aware of your surroundings after a traumatic event. ![]() This is especially likely to occur when you encounter something (for example, a person, place, or image) that reminds you of the traumatic event.
![]() I told her what I was working on, what I was reporting on, and the kind of book I wanted to potentially write, about what was happening to women in places like Clinton. She had told me a little bit about her life, and I had heard pieces of it over the years. And we met up, and we started talking, and I told her what I was doing here. While I was here in April 2015, Darci reached out to me for the first time in years by that point and said she wanted to reconnect and get in touch. That group of women were similar to the girls that I had grown up with, and I wanted to come home and see if I could report out what was happening in places like Clinton and places like rural Arkansas and across rural America. I felt that I knew the kind of women that were being represented in those studies. And I had started to read a series of studies about particularly white women with the least amounts of education - were losing years of life expectancy compared to the generation before. You were.ĭETROW: You write about people dropping out of high school their sophomore or junior year, even, and getting married once they become pregnant. Well, it's a terrible, terrible decision, but the path to redemption is through the church. And yet if you have sex before marriage and if you get pregnant, that's a terrible, terrible decision - and just trying to make sense of all of these conflicting messages as a teenager. That was our ambition when we were little.ĭETROW: Just focusing in on that marriage message, you also write about the hypocrisy and the confusion about, your life is about getting married your life is about finding a husband your life is about having children. So we had a dream of going to California. And later, when we were older, we dreamed about going to concerts in towns like that and listening to bands that we liked instead of the country music that we heard everywhere. We thought towns with bold names in the atlas must be more like real towns like we saw on TV with neighborhoods and sidewalks. ![]() When we were little, she used to be at my house a lot, and we would look through an old atlas and dream about getting away when we were older to a big place. It's only about 2,500 people, so it's just a really small town. We grew up in a small town in the Ozark Mountains - as you said, Clinton, Ark. And from that moment on, we were almost sisters. POTTS: Yeah, Darci and I met when we were really young, like, 5 or 6. Tell us about Darci, and tell us about when the two of you were really young, the type of dreams you shared. But let's start with this - your friend Darci didn't. You went to college, and we'll talk about that in a bit. Monica, welcome to ALL THINGS CONSIDERED.ĭETROW: So you're the one who, you know, as it were, got out. The book is "The Forgotten Girls: A Memoir Of Friendship And Lost Promise In Rural America." It was written by Monica Potts, a journalist who grew up in Clinton, Ark. It's the story at the heart of a new memoir about getting out of a small town and the crushing pressures to stay in it. Most of the particles went straight through the foil, as predicted by the plum pudding model. In this experiment, Rutherford aimed a ray of radioactive alpha particles at a thin gold foil. This model was later tested by Ernest Rutherford, who performed the gold foil experiment. An analogous example would be a muffin with blueberries, for example, where the berries are the negatively charged particles and the muffin is the positively charged space. This final piece was given the name of atomos, which translates to “indivisible”, and later down the line was adapted into the “atom” we know today.īased on Democritus' ideas and Antoine Lavoisier's law of conservation of mass, at the beginning of the 19 th century a British chemist named John Dalton further developed the atomic theory. He hypothesized that repeatedly cutting an object in half will eventually lead to a fundamental, indivisible fragment of said object. The earliest records of humans speculating about the fundamental makeup of the world come from Ancient Greece, where the philosopher Democritus developed the basis for the atomic theory around 430 BCE. In this article, we'll look at the history of discovering atoms and understanding their structure. Ancient Greeks had thought of this same principle and prompted the discovery and study of atoms. Or so they thought, as beyond atoms there are electrons, fermions and bosons, with quarks remaining the smallest things as far as we know. Over time, scientists found ways to continue the process of splitting things in half, far beyond our visible eye, and at last reached the fundamental building blocks of matter. Just to put it in perspective, a sheet of paper is roughly a million atoms thick. However, even then, we'd be far from reaching the final split, as this definition of "small" refers to a macroscopic scale. There is no research yet to explore the developmental characteristics of Chinese children with GDD and their comorbidities with ASD. A small amount of studies have investigated ASD in the ID population, and found that the comorbidity rate of ASD in the ID population was 4.2–32.9%, and ID children with comorbid ASD had more severe intellectual disability than children with ID alone ( 16– 18). ![]() Early diagnosis and targeted treatment are of great significance to improve the prognosis ( 13– 15). The treatment of ASD and GDD/ID are not all the same, current evidence supports that ASD should be primarily targeted at social communication skills complemented by management of abnormal behavior, but children with GDD may obtain greater benefit from structured daily routines, cognitive behavioral therapy and so on ( 11, 12). Some scholars believe that the increase in the prevalence of ASD in recent years may be related to the lack of understanding of ASD in the past and misdiagnosis of ASD as GDD/ID or in case of GDD/ID combined with ASD, only GDD/ID is diagnosed, but ASD is not diagnosed ( 3). Few studies have explored the comorbidities and developmental characteristics of ASD in children with GDD/ID from the perspective of GDD/ID. Studies by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States showed that ~1-third of 8-year-old children with ASD have combined ID ( 5, 10). Our previous studies showed that 68.3% of children with ASD under 5 years of age have combined GDD ( 9). These diseases overlap in their clinical manifestations and etiology. ![]() In the past few decades, the prevalence of diagnosed ASD has increased dramatically, from 1/5000 in 1975 to 1/44 in 2021 ( 5), but the reason for this phenomenon remains unclear.īoth GDD/ID and ASD are neurodevelopmental disorders. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is considered to be a neurodevelopmental disorder that can lead to severe social communication deficits, repetitive behaviors, and limited interests ( 4). It is reported in the literature that the prevalence of ID among the population receiving special education in the United States is gradually decreasing, from 8.3‰ in 2000 to 5.7‰ in 2010 ( 3). After growing up, many patients with GDD would demonstrate intellectual disability (ID) ( 2). Global developmental delay (GDD) is defined as a developmental disability of children under 5 years (60 months) of age, which refers to significant delays in two or more developmental domains, including gross or fine motor, speech/language, cognitive, social/personal, and activities of daily living ( 1). GDD +ASD + group is worse than GDD +ASD − group in terms of the overall development level. Development profiles in both GDD +ASD − children and GDD +ASD + children have common features but there are also differences. The GDD +ASD −group had better adaptability, fine motor skills, language ability, personal social activity than that of the GDD +ASD + group, but the gross motor skills in GDD +ASD − group were worse ( p < 0.05).Ĭonclusion: GDD children have a high proportion of comorbid ASD, and GDD children with poorer developmental levels are more likely to have ASD symptoms. The total average developmental quotient (DQ) of GDD was mildly deficient and was negatively correlated with symptoms of autism ( p fine motor skills>adaptability ( p 0.05). Result: The prevalence of ASD in children with GDD was 62.3%. The Chinese version of the Gesell Developmental Schedules was used to evaluate the level of children's mental development. Symptoms of autism were evaluated by the Autism Behavior Checklist and the Childhood Autism Rating Scale. Analyses were performed first for the whole sample and then subdivided into two subgroups (GDD +ASD −, GDD +ASD +) according to whether had ASD. Methods: Clinical data of 521 children with GDD aged from 24 to 60 months were retrospectively analyzed.
